Oren Dothan Studied architecture in Tel Aviv and Boston. He graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston Massachusetts, and has a professional degree in Architecture. Oren’s professional experience began in retail design and multifamily residential.
Since the year 2000 Oren has been practicing in Los Angeles, and has mainly focused on single-family homes. Involved in all aspects of the project from feasibility to the building design, interior design, landscape and site development to furniture designs.
DARX was established by Oren Dothan the owner and creative director of the firm. The company was formed in 2015 and operated as OD-Arch, DBA. In 2018 the firm was incorporated under the name DARX studio, Inc.
Observation, conceptual thought and composition are the foundation values of our process. The seed of an idea is fed by observation which invokes the initial thought. Conceptual thought is the ability to invent, while the objective ambition is to achieve a high level of composition.
Versatility and vocabulary of tectonics. We operate in an environment where opportunity comes in different forms. Our projects range from modern classic to contemporary, and we acknowledge the embetterment of contemporary design by the study and execution of classical elements. We enjoy the complexity of scaling and proportioning classical buildings, and appreciate their contribution to our sensibility and comprehension of contemporary form.
Character tailored function is the core of residential design. Through the process of presentation and commentary we study the client’s character, aspirations and dreams. We develop pride of ownership projects based on our learnings, and create environments which are tailored to the client’s needs.
Regionalism and local typology. The environmental and human character context in southern California allows for building types and spaces that enjoy a sense of freedom which elsewhere is hard to achieve. We take advantage of the moderate climate which allows for building spaces to extend and blur the boundaries of interior and exterior space. We are fortunate to be operating in a place where clients have great aspirations which generate ambitious building typologies and forms.
Technical vs compositional balance. Designing buildings requires a balanced implementation of technical knowledge and artistic skill. We put great emphasis on attempting to thoroughly comprehend each contributing profession and process, so we can overcome the obstacles and execute an uncompromised product. Understanding building regulations, engineering considerations and especially constructability factors, are critical skills for producing successful building projects.
Albert Einstein said that “creativity is intelligence having fun.” We put much thought in to creating our projects, and find great joy in seeing them materialize from observations and conceptual thought.
